Applying for the new financing round, the European Investment Bank (EIB) continues to support Romania in the development of the Sibiu–Pitești Autostrad, a key infrastructure project in the country’s transport network.
This finanziere phase enhances EIB’s commitment to Romania, aiming to construct the first highway crossing the Carpathian Mountains and connecting Sibiu with Pitești over a total length of 122 kilometers. The initiative significantly boosts regional and national connectivity, according to official sources.
„The renewal of a financing agreement with the European Investment Bank affirms the Ministry of Finances’ dedication to securing resources for executing strategic infrastructure initiatives. The Sibiu–Pitești Highway is a vital project for Romania’s connectivity and regional economic advancement. The support from EIB reflects the European partners’ confidence in Romania’s capacity to undertake major investments under favorable financial conditions,” stated Alexandru Nazare, Minister of Finances.
The recently finalized financing contract is part of a broader financial package valued at nearly 1 billion euros, approved by the European Investment Bank’s Administrative Council for the Sibiu–Pitești Highway project.
The initial funding agreement, amounting to 500 million euros, was signed in October 2025.
The Sibiu–Pitești Highway marks the first highway crossing the Carpathian Mountains and is a strategic component of Romania’s national road network, included in the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T). The project is divided into five sections and aims to enhance mobility, shorten travel durations, improve road safety, and stimulate economic development in the regions traversed.
The estimated total cost of the Sibiu–Pitești Highway is around 5.5 billion euros. The project is financed through European grants via the Transport 2021–2027 Program and the Major Infrastructure Operational Program 2014–2020, complemented by national contributions. Additional funding is secured through loans from the European Investment Bank. These funds will support covering the required budget allocations from the national budget during the project’s implementation phase.
